40/07 final
Letter dated 7 December
2007 from Foodaware to Ms Dorothy Craig, Chairman, Veterinary Residues
Committee:
Dear Dorothy
2008 Non-statutory Surveillance Plan for Veterinary Residues
Members considered the draft plan at the quarterly meeting yesterday.
We are extremely pleased to be given the opportunity to comment
and welcome the increased openness about the Committee’s work
programme and priorities. As a matter of principle, we consider
that the VRC should consult with consumers about its work programme
and expenditure plans. There was no dissent about the overall list
of foods under consideration, although members felt that given the
shortage of resources for surveillance, priority should be given
to those areas where recent problems have been identified. These
include imported raw poultry, farmed fish and honey. There was also
support for surveillance of powdered and ready to use baby milk
to be included because of the particular risks to babies and the
length of time since they were last surveyed.
We hope that you will find this consumer contribution helpful in
making your final decisions. As you may be aware, Foodaware’s
funding has now ceased and although we are seeking alternative sources
to continue the work, our ability to respond to consultations during
the next few months will be limited. To that extent we would be
grateful if you or VRC staff could draw our attention to those consultations
on which a consumer view would be particularly helpful and we will
do our best to respond.
Yours sincerely
Susan Knox
Chairman
