Guest Panel on Enforcement (12.30 pm – 2.00 pm)

  • Steve Dean - Director and Chief Executive, Veterinary Medicines Directorate

  • Jenny Morris - Policy Officer, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health

  • David Pickering - Senior Trading Standards Officer, Buckinghamshire Trading Standards, representing the Trading Standards Institute

  • David Lock - Policy Officer, Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services (LACORS)
Each speaker to give short introduction (5-10 mins each) followed by general discussion.

Questions for enforcement panel:
  • What are the main enforcement challenges your organisation faces today which might affect consumers?

  • What areas of EU policy should consumers be concerned about from an enforcement point of view (Food hygiene? Health claims? Meat inspection, misrepresentation and product labelling?)

  • How might proposed changes in the structures and relationships at the UK level affect enforcement priorities?

  • How might consumers input into this process?

  • Risk-based enforcement in practice - is it just cost-cutting by another name?

  • How can consumers be confident that the levels of enforcement are sufficient and ensure a satisfactory level of protection - i.e. how do you measure the effectiveness of the arrangements?
